What is Astrocartography?

A Complete Guide to Locational Astrology

Have you ever felt inexplicably drawn to certain places? Or noticed that your life flows differently in different cities? Astrocartography offers a framework for understanding these experiences by mapping your birth chart onto the globe.

Astrocartography Defined

Astrocartography (also called astro-mapping, locational astrology, or astro*carto*graphy) is a technique developed by astrologer Jim Lewis in the 1970s. It shows how the planetary energies in your birth chart express differently depending on your geographic location.

The core insight is simple: your birth chart isn't fixed. If you had been born at the same moment but in a different location, your chart would look different—particularly which planets are on the angles (Ascendant, Midheaven, etc.). Astrocartography maps these variations across the entire world.

How Astrocartography Works

At any given moment, each planet occupies a specific position in the sky. From different vantage points on Earth, that planet appears in different positions relative to the horizon and meridian.

Astrocartography calculates where each planet would be exactly on one of the four angles if you were born at that location:

  • Ascendant (AC) — Rising on the eastern horizon
  • Descendant (DC) — Setting on the western horizon
  • Midheaven (MC) — Culminating at the highest point
  • Imum Coeli (IC) — At the lowest point, opposite the MC

These calculations create lines that run across a world map—your personal astrocartography map.

The Four Types of Lines

Each line type affects different life areas:

Ascendant (AC) Lines

These run roughly north-south and affect your identity, body, and personal presence. Living on a planet's AC line makes that planet's energy central to how you present yourself and how others perceive you.

Descendant (DC) Lines

Opposite to AC lines, these affect relationships, partnerships, and others you attract. A Venus/DC line might bring romantic opportunities; a Mars/DC line might attract conflict or passionate connections.

Midheaven (MC) Lines

These curve east-west and affect your career, public reputation, and life direction. MC lines are particularly important for professional relocation decisions.

IC Lines

Opposite to MC lines, these affect your home life, family, emotional foundations, and inner world. IC lines often relate to feeling "at home" in a place.

Planetary Lines and Their Meanings

Each planet brings its own flavor when activated by location:

☀️ Sun Lines

Vitality, recognition, self-expression, leadership. Good for: building confidence, gaining visibility, creative pursuits.

🌙 Moon Lines

Emotions, nurturing, home, family connections. Good for: settling down, emotional healing, connecting with roots.

☿ Mercury Lines

Communication, learning, commerce, networking. Good for: education, writing, business, making connections.

♀ Venus Lines

Love, beauty, art, pleasure, social life. Good for: romance, creative work, enjoying life, financial ease.

♂ Mars Lines

Energy, ambition, conflict, sexuality, courage. Good for: athletic pursuits, entrepreneurship. Caution: can bring accidents or conflicts.

♃ Jupiter Lines

Expansion, luck, opportunity, growth, optimism. Good for: starting businesses, education, legal matters, spiritual growth.

♄ Saturn Lines

Discipline, challenges, maturity, responsibility. Can be difficult but builds character. Good for: serious work, establishing authority.

♅ Uranus Lines

Change, innovation, unpredictability, freedom. Good for: reinvention, tech work, breaking patterns. Can be destabilizing.

♆ Neptune Lines

Dreams, spirituality, creativity, confusion. Good for: artistic/spiritual pursuits. Caution: can bring escapism or deception.

♇ Pluto Lines

Transformation, power, intensity, endings/beginnings. Life-changing experiences. Can be overwhelming but deeply transformative.

Orb of Influence

You don't need to live exactly on a line to feel its effects. Most astrologers consider an "orb" of about 300-700 miles (500-1100 km) on either side of a line. The effect is strongest directly on the line and fades gradually with distance.

Line crossings—where two planetary lines intersect—are especially potent zones that combine both planets' energies.

How to Use Astrocartography

For Relocation

If you're considering a move, astrocartography can highlight which places support your goals. Looking for career success? Check your Jupiter and Sun MC lines. Seeking love? Look at Venus DC lines. Want to settle down? Moon IC lines might feel like home.

For Travel

Even short visits to places on your lines can be powerful. A vacation to your Venus line might bring romance or artistic inspiration. A business trip to your Jupiter MC line could open unexpected doors.

For Understanding Your Past

Looking at places you've lived or visited through an astrocartography lens can provide insight into why certain locations felt particularly meaningful, challenging, or transformative.

Important Considerations

A few things to keep in mind:

  • No place is perfect — Every location has multiple planetary influences. Even "benefic" lines like Venus and Jupiter have shadow sides.
  • Context matters — How a line manifests depends on how that planet functions in your natal chart. A well-aspected Saturn line is different from a challenged one.
  • It's one factor — Don't make major life decisions based solely on astrocartography. Consider practical factors, personal connections, and your own intuition.
  • Transits still apply — Your natal transits continue wherever you are. A difficult Saturn transit will be felt regardless of location.

Related Techniques

Astrocartography is part of a broader field called locational astrology, which also includes:

  • Relocated Charts — Recasting your birth chart for a new location
  • Local Space Astrology — Mapping planetary directions from your current location
  • Geodetic Equivalents — Aligning zodiac signs with geographic regions
