Reading the Sky
Astrology is based on the observable positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets as seen from Earth. Each celestial body moves through the twelve zodiac signs at its own pace - the Moon completes a full cycle in about 28 days, while Pluto takes roughly 248 years.
Personal Planets
The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars move relatively quickly and are considered "personal planets." Their daily positions have the most noticeable effect on day-to-day life and mood. Mercury's position influences communication, Venus affects relationships and aesthetics, and Mars drives energy and motivation.
Outer Planets
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto move slowly and mark generational or long-term themes. Jupiter spends about a year in each sign, bringing expansion, while Saturn spends about 2.5 years, bringing structure and discipline. The outermost planets stay in a sign for years or even decades.
What is Retrograde?
Retrograde motion is an optical illusion caused by differences in orbital speed. When a planet appears to move backward through the zodiac (marked "Rx" above), its astrological themes are said to turn inward. This is a time for review, revision, and reflection related to that planet's domain.
