The 12 Houses in Astrology

Understanding Life Areas in Your Birth Chart

If planets are the "what" and signs are the "how," houses are the "where" of astrology. These 12 divisions of your birth chart represent different arenas of life where planetary energies play out.

What Are Astrological Houses?

The houses are 12 segments of your birth chart, each governing a specific life domain. They're calculated based on your exact birth time and location, which determines which degree of the zodiac was rising on the eastern horizon (your Ascendant or Rising sign).

Starting from the Ascendant, the chart is divided into 12 houses moving counterclockwise. Each house has a natural sign association (1st house = Aries, 2nd = Taurus, etc.) but in your personal chart, different signs may occupy different houses.

The 12 Houses

1

First House — Self & Identity

Keywords: Self-image, appearance, first impressions, physical body, beginnings

Natural sign: Aries | Natural ruler: Mars

The 1st house cusp is your Ascendant—how you present to the world and how others perceive you initially. Planets here strongly color your personality and physical appearance.

2

Second House — Resources & Values

Keywords: Money, possessions, self-worth, values, material security

Natural sign: Taurus | Natural ruler: Venus

The 2nd house governs what you own and what you value—both material resources and self-esteem. It shows your relationship with money and how you build security.

3

Third House — Communication & Learning

Keywords: Communication, siblings, neighbors, short trips, early education, mind

Natural sign: Gemini | Natural ruler: Mercury

The 3rd house rules your immediate environment and how you process and share information. It governs writing, speaking, learning style, and relationships with siblings.

4

Fourth House — Home & Roots

Keywords: Home, family, mother/nurturing parent, ancestry, emotional foundation, endings

Natural sign: Cancer | Natural ruler: Moon

The 4th house cusp is the IC (Imum Coeli)—your private foundation. It represents home, family origins, and your innermost emotional needs. This is where you retreat and recharge.

5

Fifth House — Creativity & Pleasure

Keywords: Creativity, romance, children, fun, self-expression, gambling, hobbies

Natural sign: Leo | Natural ruler: Sun

The 5th house is where you shine, play, and create. It governs romantic affairs (not committed partnerships), creative projects, children, and anything you do for joy.

6

Sixth House — Health & Service

Keywords: Daily work, health, routines, service, pets, habits, self-improvement

Natural sign: Virgo | Natural ruler: Mercury

The 6th house rules your daily routines, work environment (not career status), physical health, and acts of service. It's about maintenance and improvement.

7

Seventh House — Partnerships

Keywords: Marriage, business partners, contracts, open enemies, one-on-one relationships

Natural sign: Libra | Natural ruler: Venus

The 7th house cusp is the Descendant—opposite your Ascendant. It shows what you seek in committed partnerships and often describes qualities you project onto others.

8

Eighth House — Transformation

Keywords: Shared resources, intimacy, death/rebirth, psychology, inheritance, taxes, the occult

Natural sign: Scorpio | Natural ruler: Pluto

The 8th house deals with merging—finances with a partner, sexual intimacy, psychological depths, and transformation through crisis. It's where we face the shadow.

9

Ninth House — Expansion & Belief

Keywords: Higher education, philosophy, religion, long-distance travel, publishing, law

Natural sign: Sagittarius | Natural ruler: Jupiter

The 9th house expands your worldview through travel, education, and seeking meaning. It governs your belief systems, ethics, and quest for truth.

10

Tenth House — Career & Public Image

Keywords: Career, reputation, authority, father/authority parent, achievements, public role

Natural sign: Capricorn | Natural ruler: Saturn

The 10th house cusp is the Midheaven (MC)—your most public point. It represents career, social status, reputation, and your contribution to society.

11

Eleventh House — Community & Hopes

Keywords: Friends, groups, social causes, hopes and wishes, networking, the collective

Natural sign: Aquarius | Natural ruler: Uranus

The 11th house connects you to community, friendships, and causes larger than yourself. It represents your social network and your vision for the future.

12

Twelfth House — The Unconscious

Keywords: Unconscious, spirituality, isolation, secrets, self-undoing, dreams, past lives

Natural sign: Pisces | Natural ruler: Neptune

The 12th house is the most hidden—representing the unconscious mind, spiritual connection, hidden enemies (often ourselves), and what we must release to grow.

The Angular Houses

Houses 1, 4, 7, and 10 are the angular houses—the most powerful positions. Planets in angular houses are prominent in your life and personality. The cusps of these houses are the four angles: Ascendant (1st), IC (4th), Descendant (7th), and Midheaven (10th).

Empty Houses

Most people have several empty houses (no planets). This doesn't mean those life areas are unimportant or inactive. It simply means no planets were in that sky sector at your birth.

To understand an empty house, look at the sign on its cusp and where the ruling planet of that sign is placed. That planet becomes the house ruler and shows how you approach that life area.

House Systems

There are different methods for calculating house cusps. The most common systems:

  • Placidus — The most popular in Western astrology; time-based divisions
  • Whole Sign — Each sign = one house; popular in Hellenistic/traditional astrology
  • Equal House — All houses are exactly 30°, starting from the Ascendant
  • Koch — Similar to Placidus but with different calculations

Different systems can place planets in different houses, especially for births at extreme latitudes. Experiment to see which system resonates with your experience.
