What Are Transits in Astrology?

Understanding Planetary Timing

Your birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at your birth—but the planets didn't stop moving. Transits are how astrologers track current planetary positions against your natal chart to understand timing, cycles, and the unfolding of your life story.

Transits Explained

Transits are the real-time positions of planets as they continue their orbits. When a transiting planet forms an aspect (conjunction, square, trine, etc.) to a planet or point in your birth chart, it "activates" that part of your chart.

Think of your birth chart as a musical instrument with strings tuned to specific notes. Transits are like fingers pressing those strings—they make your chart "play" different melodies at different times.

How Transits Work

When tracking transits, astrologers look at:

  • Which planet is transiting — Each planet brings different themes
  • What natal point it's aspecting — Which area of your chart is activated
  • The type of aspect — Conjunction, square, trine, opposition, etc.
  • The houses involved — Which life areas are affected
  • How long it lasts — Fast planets = brief; slow planets = prolonged

Planetary Transit Speeds

Different planets move at different speeds, which affects how long their transits last and how deeply they're felt:

☽ Moon~2.5 days per sign

Affects daily moods and rhythms. Too fast for major events but colors your emotional day.

☿ Mercury~3-4 weeks per sign

Affects communication, thinking, travel, technology. Mercury retrograde periods last ~3 weeks.

♀ Venus~4-5 weeks per sign

Affects love, money, aesthetics, social life. Venus retrograde occurs every 18 months.

♂ Mars~6-7 weeks per sign

Affects energy, drive, conflict, sexuality. Mars retrograde every 2 years slows momentum.

♃ Jupiter~1 year per sign

Brings expansion, opportunity, and growth. Jupiter transits are generally beneficial.

♄ Saturn~2.5 years per sign

Brings structure, responsibility, lessons. Saturn transits are challenging but build character.

♅ Uranus~7 years per sign

Brings sudden change, liberation, disruption. Uranus transits shake up stagnant areas.

♆ Neptune~14 years per sign

Brings dissolution, spirituality, confusion. Neptune transits dissolve boundaries gradually.

♇ Pluto~12-31 years per sign

Brings transformation, power struggles, rebirth. Pluto transits are life-altering.

Major Life Transits

Certain transits mark universal life passages that everyone experiences around the same ages:

Saturn Return (~29, ~58)

When Saturn returns to its natal position, it marks a major life transition into adulthood (first return) or elderhood (second return). This is often a time of reckoning, restructuring, and taking on new responsibilities.

Uranus Opposition (~42)

Transiting Uranus opposes natal Uranus around age 42, triggering the classic "midlife crisis." This transit demands authenticity and often brings sudden changes or a need to break free from limiting structures.

Chiron Return (~50)

When Chiron returns to its birth position, old wounds resurface for final healing. This transit invites deep work on core wounds and often marks a shift toward becoming a healer or mentor for others.

Jupiter Return (~12, ~24, ~36...)

Jupiter returns every 12 years, bringing optimism, opportunity, and expansion. These are generally fortunate periods for starting new ventures.

Working With Transits

Transits aren't things that happen to you—they're invitations to engage with specific energies. Here's how to work with them:

  • Know what's coming — Track major transits to your chart so you're not caught off guard
  • Understand the themes — Each transit has lessons; resistance often increases difficulty
  • Use the energy — A Mars transit is good for taking action; a Saturn transit is good for building structure
  • Be patient — Difficult transits pass; don't make permanent decisions based on temporary pain
  • Journal — Tracking how transits affect you personally helps you learn your patterns

Transits vs. Progressions

Transits are one timing technique; progressions are another. While transits track actual planetary positions, progressions symbolically advance your birth chart (typically one day = one year).

Transits tend to show external events and triggers. Progressions show internal evolution and psychological development. Most astrologers use both techniques together.
